Crocheting + Chronic Illness

Sometimes the world slows down for you, and that’s okay.

Your chronic illness is more than just an illness, it can leave your body weak, tingly, or completely unresponsive. For makers like me, whose days are often spent crocheting, creating, and managing orders, my own chronic illness can feel especially frustrating. The challenge lies not just in the pain, but in stepping back from the things that usually bring joy.

Self-care during these times isn’t optional, it’s essential. Listening to your body, allowing yourself rest, and creating a calm environment are the first steps. Even small actions, like stretching gently, sipping water, or dimming the lights, can make a significant difference.

Crocheting may feel impossible, and deadlines can loom, but giving yourself permission to pause protects both your body and your creative energy. It’s okay to let the yarn rest in your hands while you let your body rest in its space. Recovery is part of your process, and honoring it allows you to return to your craft safely and joyfully.

Keep a small “rest corner” ready with a blanket, water, tablets, and a few of your favorite quiet activities. When a your illness strikes, retreat here immediately rather than pushing through.
